Description

For the cat who shrugs at catnip. Each MidFox chew stick layers four natural materials around a silver vine (matatabi) core: the wood stick, a matatabi gall fruit knot, hemp rope, and raffia grass tassels. One chew handles what used to take four toys  dental cleaning, calming, enrichment, and teeth-mark exercise.

Features

  • Silver vine (matatabi) wooden core  triggers the same euphoric response as catnip in many cats that don't respond to catnip
  • Matatabi gall fruit knot  significantly more concentrated than the plain stick; the "double-potency" compound
  • Hemp rope wrap  coarse fibers floss teeth and stand up to hard chewers
  • Raffia grass tassels  soft, batting-friendly texture that keeps solo play going
  • Supports dental health: scrubs plaque, freshens breath
  • Calming, stress relief, and appetite stimulation
  • 100% natural materials, no additives or synthetic scents
  • Pack of 6 sticks  rotate to keep novelty high

Specifications

  • Ingredients: silver vine (Actinidia polygama) wood, matatabi gall fruit, hemp rope, raffia grass
  • Approximate stick length: 10–12 cm
  • Quantity: 6 sticks per pack
  • Origin: harvested and assembled from wild Asian matatabi
  • Storage: keep in the sealed bag between sessions to preserve potency

How to use

Offer one stick at a time for a 10–15 minute session, 3–4 times a week. Rub the gall fruit against your cat's cheek to activate the scent. Retire and replace the stick when the wood core is fully frayed.

Safety

Supervise as you would any chew toy. Hemp and raffia fibers are food-grade but are not designed to be swallowed in quantity. Not suitable for cats under 3 months.

Chew Stick Cat Toy

Silver vine covers the ~30% that catnip leaves out.

For the Cat Who Ignores Catnip

Roughly a third of cats don't respond to catnip. Silver vine (matatabi) — harvested from wild Actinidia polygama in Japan and northern China — activates a different compound, and studies put its response rate closer to 80% of all cats. We bound the wood core with hemp rope for dental scrubbing, wrapped raffia tassels at both ends for solo batting, and knotted on the matatabi gall fruit for the stronger scent hit. One stick replaces a catnip toy, a dental chew, and a teaser wand — and costs less than any of them.

Frequently asked questions

My cat doesn't react to catnip — will silver vine work?

Very likely, yes. Silver vine contains different active compounds (actinidine, nepetalactol) from catnip, and published research shows about 75-80% of cats respond to silver vine versus ~65-70% for catnip. Many cats who ignore catnip react strongly to silver vine — that's a major reason to try it.

How often should I give my cat one?

10-15 minute play sessions, 3-4 times a week, keep the scent novel. Store the pack sealed between sessions — exposure to open air will slowly reduce potency over a few weeks. Replace the stick when the wood core is fully frayed.

Is it safe to chew? Any choking risk?

The chew is designed for gnawing. Hemp rope and raffia shed in thin, digestible fibers the way grass does — fine in small amounts. Supervise the first few sessions as you would any new toy, especially with aggressive chewers. Not recommended for cats under 3 months.

Why You’ll Love It

My tuxedo cat never cared about catnip. First silver vine stick and she turned into a zoomie machine — 20 minutes of drunken rolling.

We'd tried four dental chews she refused to touch. These she actually chews — plaque is visibly lower after three weeks.
